Trans People are LEADING the San Francisco Pride Parade
June 14, 2010, For Immediate Release
The Center of Excellence for Transgender Health is proud to announce that trans people will be the Lead Contingent for the 2010 San Francisco Pride Parade on Sunday, June 27th! The lead contingent directly follows the Dykes on Bikes and the official SF Pride float. This historic first is a wonderful opportunity to show that trans people are proud, united, and fierce!
"From the Compton's Cafeteria riot and the Stonewall rebellion through today, transgender people have always been at the forefront of the LGBT movement," said Amy Andre, the Executive Director of San Francisco Pride. In recognizing the many significant contributions of trans community members to the larger LGBT movement, San Francisco Pride honors our trans communities with the invitation to participate as the Lead Contingent for the Parade.
JoAnne Keatley, the Director of the Center of Excellence for Transgender Health, believes that this event is important because, "it demonstrates to the world that our various communities are embracing of gender difference. Trans people are now leading the way to historic changes, whether those be in employment, legal or health care access issues. We are eliminating barriers and making the world more inclusive for us all."
All trans people are welcome to march with us! Organizations, groups, and individuals are encouraged to bring decorated umbrellas to the march as our unifying visual theme. There's room for all trans people under our umbrella! Please join us on Sunday, June 27th no later than 10am on Spear Street between Market St. and Mission St.
This community driven effort is a collaboration between the Center of Excellence for Transgender Health, El/La Program Para Trans Latinas, Lyon-Martin Health Services, Project HEALTH, SF TEAM, TGI Justice Project, TGSF, the Transgender Law Center, the Trans March, TransPowerment y TransUnidas, and many more trans-serving organizations and community members. We look forward to seeing you at the 2010 San Francisco Pride Parade!
